Overall the airport is the third busiest in Canada in terms of passenger traffic and 4th busiest in the country in terms of aircraft movement. In 2006 the airport served over 11 million people and had over 213,000 aircraft movements. The airport, along with 7 others in Canada, has United States border pre-clearance. In terms of domestic flights Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport ranks 1st in Canada and is one of the four hubs of Air Canada. Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is easy to reach and located to the west of Montreal. The airport can be reached from all directions and is supported by a connecting network of main roads that have many signs pointing you to the airport. The eastern perimeter of the airport is skirted by Highway 40, which is referred to as "Autoroute de la Cote-De-Liesse" When you are driving tot the airport give yourself plenty of time as there may be traffic and congestion, especially in the heart of Montreal and during rush hour.

There are currency exchange counters, communication facilities, and banking facilities available at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. All around the terminal building on both floors there are many ATM machines. The main departure level is where the bureau de change outlets are located, which give you up to date currency exchange rates. On the departure level there are also several travel insurance offices.

There are many duty free shops that are located in the airport with sell an array of tax-free items. There are also specialty shops and retail establishments located at the airport. The ground transport available at the airport includes shuttle bus, rental cars, Aérobus, taxis, and limousines.

The Aérobus service at the airport is a shuttle bus to and from the airport to central Montreal. Many of the hotel shuttle buses operate from the city center. The tickets for the Aérobus can be purchased at the Aérobus counter, which is located in the terminal as well as at a ticket booth located close to the main entrance of the airport. The Aérobus is the least expensive way to get to central Montreal.

There are many taxis available at Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. You can take a taxi to Montreal or other destinations near the airport. The trip form the airport to central Montreal takes around 30-45 minutes depending on what time of day it is and the traffic. You should use official YUL airport taxis so you can make sure you are not overcharged. The short term parking at the airport is widely available and the maximum stay is three hours. If you go over the limit you will be charged. The short-term parking is located close to valet parking. This short term parking area is the best place to drop of and pick up passengers as well. There is an intermediate parking at the airport in a multi story parking facility, which provides for car parking of more than three hours. The intermediate parking area is where the rental cars for pick up and drop off are located. A shuttle that will take you to and from the airport from the long term parking area serves the long-term parking at the airport. This shuttle runs ever 10 minutes. There is also Exterior parking available at the airport and is just past the multi story parking area. This is a less expensive parking area than the intermediate parking area.

The airport has valet parking available for VIP passengers. The valet parking allows the passengers to park their car outside the departure area and give their keys to a valet. The airport was built in the 1940's as it replaced St. Hubert Airport because of the growing demand space due to growing passenger flights. The airport was immediately very busy, as in the 1950's it was the busiest airport in all of Canada serving more than a million passengers annually. In the 1960's the main terminal was built for $30 million and was one of the more modern airports in the world. During the 1970's and 80's the number of flights dramatically decreased because of the building of Mirabel Airport, which is not far away. But in 1997 many international flights began to increase service to the airport. In the airports inception it was named Montreal Dorval Airport but in the 60's the name was changed to Aéroport Dorval de Montréal. Finally in 2004 the airport was renamed Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International after a former Canadian Prime Minister.
