The Dallas metroplex was on the lookout for an airport even before it was constructed. In 1927, Dallas engaged in talks with neighboring Fort Worth about opening a joint airport for the two areas. The main Fort Worth airfield was eventually abandoned, and by January 13th, 1974, the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was up and running. The airport grew steadily in importance, because it was the only airport from which long flights as well as international fights were permitted, for many miles around.
