Dallas Fort Worth International Airport
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is an airport with an interesting history. It is also one of the biggest airports in the United States. In addition, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is one of the busiest airports - with a high number of travelers flying into and out of it daily. This airport is just like a small city - in fact, it is located within the borders of four different suburbs, and it has all the services and amenities of a small city.
The Dallas metroplex was on the lookout for an airport even before it was constructed. In 1927, Dallas engaged in talks with neighboring Fort Worth about opening a joint airport for the two areas. However, at that time, Fort Worth declined, and each city opened its own airport. These two airports, Love Field and Meacham Field, had limited airline service for many years. However, as time went on, the demand for bigger airplanes, more flights, and more service steadily grew. Therefore, in 1940, after a $1.9 million grant from the Civil Aeronautics Administration, an airport was under construction to serve both the Dallas and Fort Worth areas.
The Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was not going to become a reality easily, though. The project was started, abandoned, and started up again several times. This was because neither Dallas nor Fort Worth could come to an agreement. The disagreements centered around where the airport would be located, what size it would be, and how it would be constructed. These problems led to a delay of many years in which the two towns used their own separate airports continuously.
After a long period of time, the two sides finally agreed on plans that would suit them both, and the Dallas Fort Worth Airport was completed. The new airport was located just 12 miles from the original Dallas Love Field, and as a result, the opening of the new airport mostly consisted of Fort Worth transferring its flights to the new area. The main Fort Worth airfield was eventually abandoned, and by January 13th, 1974, the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport was up and running. The airport grew steadily in importance, because it was the only airport from which long flights as well as international fights were permitted, for many miles around.

Fortunately, the Dallas Fort Worth Airport is laid out very simply. This is because of the sheer volume of people that go through the airport annually and on a daily basis. In fact, in terms of aircraft traffic and people movement, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is the third busiest airport in the world.
The airport is laid out to accommodate the many people who fly in and out of it each day. There are five terminals in the airport, which are all easily accessible from the main lobby, or main terminal. The airport layout was actually designed in order to be expanded in the future. Therefore, the current layout can actually accommodate as many as thirteen terminals, although right now there are only five. However, these are all built around the main lobby and terminal in the airport, which means that you will be able to find your specific terminal and the gate that you need without any hassle. In the main lobby or main terminal, you will find the shops, businesses, restaurants, and amenities that you need, as well as several information desks and help desks.

The five terminals at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport are semicircular. They are all built around the road that runs to the airport, making each of them accessible from the main doors and the lobby. In the past, the terminals were labeled with both a number and a letter, which proved to be confusing, since the numbers were given in north to south order, and the letters were either an E or a W, which indicated East and West. Because of the confusion that came about with this numbering system, the terminal names were changed to simple letters, A, B, C, D, and E.
The terminals are designed in such a way as to make it even easier to use the airport. When the terminals were built, the idea was to make the distance that a person had to walk from their car to their gate as short as possible. Because the parking garage was beneath the terminals, a passenger could park in the correct parking garage, and therefore be almost immediately at their gate. However, this created a long walk for anyone who was coming into the airport via plane, and having to connect to a flight from a different terminal. When the airport opened, there was a people mover that was already installed. However, this was slow and only ran in one direction. In April of 2005, SkyLink was opened, which goes in both directions, and serves all five terminals. This allows you to get from one area to another very quickly. In fact, the SkyLink is the world's biggest and fastest high-speed train system within an airport.
